How To Attach a Southend Tail Extension

How To Attach a Tail Extension To a Horse Without a Lot of Hair On Top

Extension Instructions

Grommet Style Instructions

1. Lift the top part of the hair up and fasten with a large hair clip.

2. Place the tail extension as close to the tail bone as possible about a third of the way down or where you have top hair to cover the three holes.

3. Pull braided strands of hair through the 3 holes at the top.

4. Wrap an elastic on the three braids and pull it tight.

5. Braid about 1 inch and secure with another elastic.

6. Midway down the extension are another 3 holes. Pull hair through these holes.

7. Wrap with another elastic band and pull tight.

8. Braid 1 inch and secure with elastic. By doing this the extension moves with the natural tail and becomes one.

Double Loop Instructions

1. Place the extension near the bottom of the tail bone.

2. Take 2 strands close to the tail bone and place the loop on top of one of the strands.

3. Wrap 2 elastics on the strand and then tighten the elastic to the tail bone. This will snug the loop up to the tail bone.

4. Section off 3 strands and braid downwards making sure that the braid is tight.

5. Wrap an elastic about 2 inches down.

6. Take the braid and a section from the extension and make 3 pieces so you end with a another brain.

7. Do the same for the other loop.

Helpful Hints

Practice Beforehand

Try to practice putting in the extension before a show so you can see how it looks and make adjustments. Make sure the tail doesn't drag on the ground. If it does, move it up or trim it so your horse doesn't step on it while backing up. If the grommets are noticeable, you can darken them with permanent marker or you can paint them.

Care of Extension

It is not a good idea to leave the tail extension in overnight, as damage may occur to the extension or your horses natural tail. If you notice the tail catching between the legs when he moves, use a spray such as Show Sheen or Static Guard on the inside of the legs.
